More for the Punjab

I've finished a couple more units from Gough's "Army of the Punjab" from the Anglo-Sikh Wars. Again these are all from Irregular Miniatures.

First up some Bengal Irregular Cavalry. These are painted as Skinner's Horse, more or less. At least I gave them yellow kurtas. On reflection I should probably have given some of them lances, which would have been easy enough to do for those with their swords a little more to the side. However I just got stuck in instead and slapped the paint on.

The other question was what bases to put them on. There's a tendency for irregular cavalry to be based on "irregular" shaped bases. "Uiduach OB" of the "You Do Not Know The North" blog has his on hexes (link) for example. I pondered this for a while and in the end decided that I'd stick with my standard 30mm x 30mm bases and differentiate in the rules. Irregular bases mean that it gets messy lining figures up. Admittedly this isn't a problem if I use squares, but I've made the decision now. Makes storage easier.

The facial features aren't great. I should probably have picked out some beards and moustaches.

In the 2nd Anglo Sikh Wars some lancers had been shipped out. The 16th Lancers made their name at the battle of Aliwal with the one of the usual sort of more bravery than sense charges that came off. They got so much blood on their pennons, allegedly, that in future they stiffened them in commemoration. Or something like that.

These figures are from the Irregular Crimea Range and come with just lances, so I added some paper pennons. Unfortunately Ian doesn't make an officer or bugler figure in a lancer csapkas as far as I could see, but I decided it wasn't a problem.

It's more obvious in the pictures that these have mutton chop whiskers, which wasn't so obvious when I painted them. My painting wasn't good enough to pick out two lines of small buttons as well, it seems.

Still, I like them.

Next week I expect to start work on more of the Sikhs, depending upon a number of other things. After the Opium War game earlier in the week I decided that what I needed to do was focus on the city fighting. So I needed a larger city. Which meant making more walls. And sourcing some more buildings.

I had a go at setting it up this afternoon, and I think I've got it sorted but I may change my mind. I might need some more sections with gates in them. For buildings I've found as load of small aquarium models on Temu, so I've bunged in an order that I can afford to lose if it doesn't turn up.

Of course, if it doesn't I'll need to think of something else.

  1. Nice cavalry, you have done a good job on them, lovely looking figures, Irregular have so many ranges that a lot get lost and I tend forget about them.

    1. They're quite good at signposting links between ranges, which is how I found the lancers. It would help if there were pictures of all the figures. Sometimes ordering on line can be a bit of a lottery.

  2. The lancers look good. Also I think Irregular's offering is the best for British irregular horse. The saddle cloths can be painted in unit colours. A couple with lances would be good if Iain was so minded. I see he is back running the show.

I've been looking at Temu following your lead. Prices seem to be at least half the price of ebay. Of course that's not really a saving if your order doesn't turn up. Good luck.

    1. Thanks. I thought your Irregulars were Irregular. I might do some lancer conversions on the next batch.

The Temu order is in the country and with Evri. So it still might not turn up.
