I think his description of the combat at Lincoln is the closest justification I've ever read for the Warhammer superhero type leaders, however.Trebianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02221916804339000102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7615782020735321095.post-39896401098821190922015-09-03T20:22:19.764+01:002015-09-03T20:22:19.764+01:00The maps are legible, if you zoom in. My main concern is that when reading a book I like to flip backwards and forwards to the maps when place names come up, and I find that awkward with a Kindle. With a book I just leave a finger in the page.Trebianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02221916804339000102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7615782020735321095.post-11603233942944189062015-09-03T09:17:01.042+01:002015-09-03T09:17:01.042+01:00Like Mike I first came across Marshall the Marshal...Like Mike I first came across Marshall the Marshall years ago. I've even re-fought the 2nd Battle of Lincoln in 25mm- they'd be 28mm nowe if I still had the armies. I still have most of the castle walls ! . I'm far from unversed in the period- though I don't play it any more I still have the books. The whole "bad King John" thing fascinate me- he was a better King than his useless Bro'
However Mike point is very apposite regarding historical fashion - which very occasionally percolates into wargaming- not that there is a lot of history there these daysBig Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17235478427317774609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7615782020735321095.post-70575738848691384292015-09-03T08:56:35.349+01:002015-09-03T08:56:35.349+01:00Historical fashion is strange.

Now he features in multiple books, historical fiction as well as history.

As for Kindle e-reader maps: this is down to the effort made by the author (if self publishing) or the publisher (who, if typical, probably brushes off any author complaints).

It is perfectly possible to produce legible maps, particularly on the latest Paperwhites but these really need to be specifically designed for the Kindle: I guess that in most cases the maps for the paper book are just used because the publisher does not want to spend the time and money to do it right.

I prefer paper books where the illustrations matter (for example those on modern naval affairs with lots of ship plans and detailed photographs) but prefer e-books when this is not the case as long as the maps are adequate. What I really would like to see is Amazon's "look inside" feature allowing one to sample all the maps. For pre photography military history I find the pictures very often add nothing to my enjoyment of the book (typically being a whole string of reproduction of paintings of the commanders, plus the odd highly imaginative battle scene).
