So Many Games, So Little Time

Martin Wallace, the noted board game designer, stopped by this week. Martin comes from Manchester and now lives in Australia. After he emigrated to the southern hemisphere I'd see him every couple of years, as he blagged an overnight stay with us whilst visiting UK Games Expo or Essenspiel. Due to COVID it turns out I haven't actually seen him for five years - the period, in fact, when I published my Edgcote book and all of my rules sets. How time flies. Any way, it was good to catch up. Martin is a board gamer rather than a figure gamer, testament to the fact that WD is a very broad church, as I met him at COW and have played a lot of his games in the design phase. On Monday evening we initially played a fairly lightweight game together with Mrs T which Martin is co-developing with the theme of drinking lots of coffee in order to get jobs done. Martin then whipped out the the latest in the Brass family for a playtest, and Mrs T retired to the lounge to watch some Gallic noir

Yes, I know you're all thinking what poor sap blogs on Christmas Eve. Well, I've got in from work early, shovelled the snow, made a cup of tea and now there's cooking stuff going on in the kitchen, so I've just ducked out of the way. Only to be interrupted as the microwave has just stopped working. There's that smoky electric burn smell hanging around the kitchen now. It's not the fuse, - it starts up then stops after 30 seconds. Lights and display still work, turntable rotates but then it stops and shuts down. Luckily there's a spare one in the garage, previously used by one of the younger Trebians at University. Back in time with HOTT and DBF

Chris K has been working on and off with the playtest group hoping to publish the updated "Hordes of the Things", to be called DBF. I'm not that bothered with it, to be honest, but Chris is interested so it is only fair to give him support. This week, however, there was a carrot dangling in the shape of some of my old figures I gave to Chris many moons ago. When I was in my teens I invested in Middle Earth armies initially based round converted Airfix and then transitioning to Minifigs ME range. I bought an early set of table top rules called "Wizards and Warfare", which I now find I had as a first edition, that probably dates from about 1974. I've lost my original copy, but I found a picture of the cover of the rules I had online. The magic in them was heavily influenced by Jack Vance's "Dying Earth" I recall. Showing a tendency I have kept until now I immediately started modifying them and had a hand written QRS that I'd done on the card
