Can you tell that it's finished yet?

I have finally finished the Belisarian Byzantine Army. Here's the proof:

It's resplendent in a box I nicked from work, rather than the standard Trebian storage system as I think it may be a bit big for that.

I first started talking about this army in September last year, so it has taken about 9 months to get it done, which isn't too bad, although it'd have been finished much earlier if I hadn't been made redundant. The projects I was going to do before the order arrived that I wrote about at the same time still haven't been completed, so they're back on the bench to be done.

I'm quite pleased with the look of it, but that's the last time for an army painted in this style. Takes too long and is too fiddly. On reflection it is also too large, - I'll never use all of those horse archers as far as I can see if I ever want to win a game.

Now, what's next?

  1. Winning games isn't the end-all of gaming. Actually it is just a nice thing to sometimes happen.

Having fun and enjoying the company is far more important. So don't fear getting those horse archers on the table top, sir.

    1. You are right that winning isn't everything, but it would be good to emulate the great general once in a while.

In Armati the heavy horse archer is a bit useless, - neithero ne thing nor the other. Not heavy enough to fighto ther heavies, not nimble enough to shoot them up.

However I think they do look a bit scary when lined up facing your opponent and if you have a lucky round of shooting things may go your way.

Anyhow the aim of the project was top iant an army I've wanted since I was at Uni, so that's something ticked off the list at least.

  2. Well done! I have a heavy infantry unit in my Belisarian army with the same white-on-blue shield design :-)

What's next? Well, I think you need to paint up a horde of Gothic cavalry to go up against your Byzantines. Or possibly Vandals.
    Get crackin' on that :-)

    1. I like that shield design as well. They haven't been out much yet, those heavy foot. Not enough for a full division on their own, and they manoeuvre like carthorses.

What's next? Another big pile of SCW stuff when I place the order. Phil S has a Totila Gothic army which regulalry takes me to pieces, so no need to paint one of those. If I get Vandals I'll need to modify the army for North Africa.

The other aim of the army was to have something to takle to an Armati tournament should I ever find the time, so yet another box ticked.

  3. And it looks good. Spot on Treb a worthy tick in several boxes. I think those Heavy Horse archers are great ... but you have to get to know them to get the best out of them (make sure they can all shoot, all the time :) ...)...

    1. Advice from my opponent....hmmm....They mostly did all shoot in the last game, and they pretty much all missed as well.

But I like them, - there's enough for three units under AMW as well not that there's a half decent army list!

  4. You could play DBMM with them.. ;-)

    1. I could also cut my leg off with a rusty saw, but that's not going to happen either.
