Jon F, Caesar nominated blogger of Palouse Wargaming Journal, has been a play tester during the development of "For Whom the Dice Rolls". A few weeks ago he offered to paint me a new unit, if I had a gap, because he wanted to have some "skin in the game". I said if he was really resolved on the idea he could twist my arm and I'd be able to squeeze in another unit of Basques.
He finished them just over a week ago and posted a quick pic on his blog. He then entrusted them to the USPS and the Royal Mail. They got here this weekend.
I'm pleased to say they survived their trip intact, all nicely wadded up. I'm very impressed with the look of them, as not only do they have Jon's excellent brushwork, but they're also the most recent Peter Pig beret-wearing sculpts.
Just to prove nothing goes to waste in this house, the figures have been based on Peter Pig 30mm square plastic bases, recovered from my Taiping re-basing exercise from a few years ago (actually nearly four years - crikey!), with the normal polyfilla/sand combo and a bit of dry-brushing and some mini pebbles. Here's a rifle company. Alas, no matter how careful I am with the filler, I'm afraid it laps over the boots a bit.
This is an LMG section. You can just see the Basque flag painted on the left arm.
Command stand. You can't see that the flag isn't perfectly lined up in real life. Need to get my fine point scissors out.
Here's all the small arms bases together. The new Piggies are a bit chunkier (mini 28mm build), but the animation and poses are good.
Lastly, the MG teams. Mr Pig doesn't make a beret crew, but the pasamonta caps will do just fine.
I hope Jon is pleased with the basing work I've done. I think it sets the figures off really nicely. There's a space in a storage box just waiting for them too. Now I only need to decide how to introduce them on the table top.
So, thanks Mr F. Much appreciated, and very nicely done too.
Basing looks great, Graham! Did one figure get lost in transit? 26 went in but I see only 25 coming out. Did you notice the head swaps on the two loaders?
ReplyDeleteI did wonder if you'd head swapped the loaders! Nice job. As to the 25/26 - one of the little b*gg*rs got trapped in the lining of the wrapping. I've just found him. My unit sizes are normally small than this, anyway, numbering 24 figures so I thought I'd got one extra not one too few. Should have counted the figures in your photo. If I don't rebase, he may pop up in some Basque heavy weapons bases likely to be assembled from some spares.
DeleteGlad he turned up for duty and that you had not tossed the wrapping! No shirkers in this army.
DeleteLucky man. Missed the rubbish throw out on Thursday evening.
DeleteNice work both of you! Plenty of variety in the SCW.
ReplyDeleteYup. And they have flags too. What more could you want?
DeleteVery high quality work. The basing is gorgeous!
DeleteI may not be able to paint that well, but I can do a nice base.
DeleteThose look great..super figures and a jolly good paint job too! I'll have to get some beret wearing militia now.
ReplyDeleteThey are good figures. If you want beret wearing troops don't overlook the Carlists. A full militia in berets unit is probably pushing it a bit, as you should have some chip bag hats in there too.
DeleteThis has been an education for me on the SCW. Thanks for all the posts!

Pleased that you are enjoying them. The SCW is a fascinating period, and the armies do have an interesting look.
