Am I a proper wargamer?

There’s one of those questionnaire things going round where someone’s prejudices (mainly around toy soldiers and table top games) are assembled in a list for us all to measure ourselves by.

Looking at it the late Paddy G might not score above half on the list, and he was a proper wargamer.

As for me, I haven’t scored myself, but I’ve ploughed up half my garden to put in a purpose built wargames room.

£500/$500 on figures my a*se.

Who’s a proper wargamer then?

  1. Me, but I don't think that these viral blog posts are about anything other than seeing if one's story is similar to another person's story? and yes I did add my little bit to the story, just as you have done. Like you, but differently, I questioned the questions. It's all part of the story we tell to make sense of our lives.

    1. I think you are right. It is more about validating an individual's life experiences (and getting a laugh) than making any serious point.

But £500 on figures? That's nothing.

  2. Don't give a bugger myself- I havn't seen the thing don't feel the need to "validate " my life but do always need to have a laugh.v Havn't spent as littel as a monkey on soldiers for years- mind you I suppose my case is a bit different

    1. We're all different in our own ways, - some more than others. I suspect that's the point.

In faitness to the guy that started it, - Phil B - I don't think he meant it to be taken as a yardstick the way others have.

    2. You are almost certainly right there- most of these things start as a larf but end up entirly different- theory of unintened consequences.

    3. Just like throwing sticks....it all starts out as fun then someone puts a small child's eye out.

  4. This is all a bit meaningless to some (me included.) Is it possible to post the questionnaire or provide a link to it?

    1. Sure, The original list was at: http://philbancients.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/are-you-proper-wargamer.html

I think I've rather made the point that I'm not going to re-blog it.

  5. The Ray Mears approach would be that you're not a proper wargamer (canoeist) unless you've sculpted and cast your own armies (built your own birch bark canoe).

This one could run and run :O)

    1. What? The modern wargamer can barely do a head swap.

    1. An interesting piece of analysis. I think the nature of what I find interesting in wargmaing is off the mainstram, - hence my questions haven't gone viral, unlike Phil B's, which are mainly focussed around figure based table top wargaming.
