DeleteI had a really good game of Hydaspes with these rules yesterday. All very close. Alexander was killed heroically and both sides survived a couple of break tests before the Macedonians won. Looking forward to my next game.

Sounds great! Alexander has a tendency to get himself killed in a lot of games I run. You give players enough bonuses with him, and they'll chuck him into anything! If you email me a battle report with a picture or two I'll post it on the blog.

This has been my fastest selling publication to date. I don't think it's one of my systems you have been exposed to other than through the pages of Nugget. Best of luck to you too, with the Balkans book. Good to see they've let you loose with hardbacks..

DeleteUnfortunately the game ended with a few pints down the George and it all got a bit hazy after that! I tried a single malt to refresh the memory cells but for some reason that didn't work!
ReplyDeleteI can't see how a game ending up down the pub for a pint or two can be labelled "unfortunately". I am interested in how you find some of the other scenarios play out. Hydaspes and Raphia have had the most test plays by quite a margin.

ReplyDeleteI find that not easy to answer. The main mechanism is based on managing a hand of cards, and bluffing your opponent as to what you are going to do, so most likely not. Then again, you could deal out the cards face down to units and see what turns up, so it may work rather well. As it only costs you £5 as either a pdf or hardcopy (+£1 for postage) it won't break the bank if you try them out.
DeleteI had a go at playing solo to try out the game mechanics. I put the cards face down and it was quite fun watching the narrative unfold. As well as playing the cards face down, you could also use the scrap heap rule about moves being mandatory if the cards allow. Having said that, the real point of the game is bluffing your opponent - a very challenging game with lots of decisions to be made. The scenarios are good too!

Yes. That's a good point about the Scrapheap rule and playing the cards almost a random. That would make the best laid plans unravel. (BTW For those of you without the rules, the "Scrapheap" is a page of rules that didn't make it into the final version for various reasons, but worked fine when they were used).
