More Sikhs

I've been painting one each of the unique troop types in my expanding Sikh Army. The last two troop types left are a unit of Akali - Sikh fanatics - and a unit of Cuirassiers that wear a mix of Oriental and European equipment.

The Cuirassiers wear tunics and cuirasses in the Napoleonic French style. It's been a while since I painted anything in such a get up, although the distinctly Moghul style helmet and mail neck guard rather give a lie to the Napoleonic vibe. These figures are from Irregular again.

Because I wanted to dry brush the mail and armour I used a black undercoat. That has muted the colours a bit, so I don't know if that was the best choice.

The Akali figures are from QRF. They look a little odd, as the proportions are dominated by the tall headdress. I chose a pack of QRF's figures over Irregular's as they only have one pose which is a figure with a throwing quoit. I decided against trying to mix figures from both manufacturers in one unit, as I wasn't sure it would work.  As these are religious fanatics they have similarities in costume but not a uniform as such. They dressed mostly in blue, according to the Osprey. These were undercoated in white, but the shade of blue I've used is really a bit darker than I intended in certain light.

There are challenges in sculpting these figures in this scale. Principally the headdress, which should have five throwing quoits on it. Perhaps they've already thrown some of them. In theory these figures are matchlock men, but I couldn't see the match nor the lock, so didn't paint them. These figures have brown leather cross belts. It is a shame they weren't white as that would have made a striking contrast against the dark blue.

The tulwar figures have more of the fanatic look, and fewer quoits. Perhaps they've thrown even more than the musketeers.

As these troops were limited in the armies I'm only going to have one unit of each.

At least for now.
