Phil, Chris, Steve and Tim are most likely going to a DBA doubles tournament (I'm busy elsewhere) so there's a need to try out the combos they are proposing to use.
As it turned out Tim was busy and Steve was unwell. So we ended up with the three of us playing the two armies that Steve and Tim are proposing to use against each other. In 28mm. Without using any of the figures you'd recognise for the armies (Carthaginians & Syracusans, I think).
All in all, in terms of the set objectives we missed by a long way. Still, it's good to get out of an evening.
I played Phil first, using the Late Carthaginians. I was defending, so Phil was able to stick Auxilia in front of my elephants. Strangely he massed on his right, which gave me a big overlap on the opposite flank. Just needed to get it into play
Of course Phil knew what he was doing, and was aiming to overwhelm my left before my right could envelope his left flank.
I had to send my general across to bolster the threatened wing.
Through a combination of tactical acumen and genius (I did get some troops in the right places and I rolled more sixes) I ended first contact two dead elements to the good. Using the 28mm size bases meant that judging some of the distances wasn't always easy. I got the spacing behind the light horse on the left wrong, which resulted in them being destroyed, for example.
Next move my left hand elephant scored a win by doubling some Auxilia and I killed a spear on my right to romp home with a 4:1 victory.
As intimated above this was achieved mostly be rolling good dice. Chris had similar match ups with the elephants in his game, and failed to kill anything.
And that was it.
