More from the not Dark Ages

I've finished another DBA army. Damn things are addictive. I got this one to go with another one I haven't painted yet, which is a bit like starting at the back of a book I suppose.

The army is III/40a or "Vikings 790 -849AD". Phil says it's the competition gamers' choice from the various sub types available, because it's got lots of Fast Blade (3Bd). Well, it may be, but that's not why it was bought.

The figures are all Peter Pig, from their Dark Ages  range (BTW not a fan of the term "Dark Ages" but now is not the time to debate that). I mussed up the order slightly and  should have bought a packet of Berserkers. However I only needed 3 of them and I couldn't bear to waste more than half of a packet. Plus I'm not sure units of Berserkers was really a thing.

This is the full 14 elements for all the options. Not great with the idea that you don't get a Bow option and have to take Psiloi archers. In any event, the Psiloi figures aren't from the PP Viking range but elsewhere.

So you get 10 x 3Bd ("Raiders"), a 1 x 4Bd General, 1 x 4Bd ("Huscarls") 1 x Ps ("Archers") and 1 x 3Wb ("Berserks").

This is the General with his Raven Banner. The pole is a piece of plastic broom bristle given a 90 degree bend. The flag is a penny sized piece of paper folded into four, with glue between each layer. It is strapped to the pole with strips of sticky label and a bit of glue for luck. If you are confused the head of the yellow raven is pointed towards the bend in the pole, with wings either side. The shields have a couple of bird designs too. I was going to buy shield transfers at Partizan then changed my mind. I'm glad I did.

The Huscarl element, featuring a mostly simple geometric designs.

First batch of Raiders. I went for colourful shields because otherwise it's quite a dowdy army. I know they're 3Bd, but lots have spears. Because they would have done.

Batch two. These shields are more figurative than geometric.

Final four elements. They have quite a nice feel to them.

My 3Wb Berserk base. I'm not completely happy with them, but they are unlikely ever to be used.

Finally the archer Ps. These may see some action, if there's heavy terrain about, or if I want something out wide, but mostly I think I'll be using the blades.

Nice range of figures to paint, but Piggies usually are. Hopefully they'll get a run out on Tuesday.
