Normalising my Normans

My Normans are, probably, the oldest bespoke DBA army I have. They were a birthday gift, along with "Anglo-Danish" just after I'd visited Hastings, given to me by my big brother. They were first generation Museum Miniatures Army Packs, suitable for DBA v1 and still workable for DBA 2.2.

The whole army arrayed, including the new figures, and covering most of the options

Alas, whilst the Anglo Danish survived the DBA 3 amendments as a usable army, the Normans did not. The army list was quite heavily amended, increasing the number of mounted elements. I could no long field an army and unfortunately the figures were now only available as that DBA pack. That meant throwing away/spare boxing a lot of figures to make it up, so I didn't. I also struggled to find figures I thought were compatible (Museum's Z range certainly are not!!) The army just sat in its box, unusable.

At one of our evening sessions Steve pulled out some Baueda figures, and they looked about right. They're the correct height at least. So I thought I'd bung in an order and see how they matched.

Here's three elements of Milites (3Kn) using the Baueda figures. The middle figure of the middle element is actually a Museum figure, so you can see the match. His head is a bit bigger than the Baueda figures, but that's because they are correctly proportioned and he is not. They are standing on a "moss mat" I bought in Flying Tyger.

This picture is probably a little bit more in focus.

Now some figures being used as Bretons (Cv). They are mostly in jacks rather than mail, and are all on grey horses so you can tell the  difference. I meant to order figures with round shields, but I got a bit mixed up.

All in all I'm pleased with the figure match, and they're nice looking figures. Painted well too. I prefer these to the Milites figures, partly as the lances are sturdier and better defined. I flattened and shaped the lances on all the figures anyway as I thought they didn't look like they had sharp enough points on them.

Another addition to the army in DBA 3 was a 7 Horde element, so I did one of those too. These aren't Baueda. They're Peter Pig, because I ordered another early medieval army from them at the time I was working on the Normans and had some spare figures to make this group up.

I like painting Piggies. They fit my style.

So this is one of the army selections now open to me with the new figures: 1 x 3Kn Gen (front), 6 x 3Kn (back row), 2 x Cv, 2 x3Bw  and 1 x Cb. The Baueda figures are on the ledt hand side.

Another valid army, with the 2 x Cv swapped out for 2 x 3Kn.

Finally an infantry heavy option, with three dismounted Milites (I know they have spears, but they are 4Bd), and 7Hd in for the Cb. I have a LH element too, but I didn't photograph the army with that option.

Not a major project, but I'm pleased I've done it at last, and have figures I can start using again.

  1. Nice to be able to get some figures that fit so well and get the army back on the table, it looks good, nice work on the additions.

    1. Thanks. I could probably have done this earlier, but it is increasingly difficult to get an actual look at 15mm figures at the shows I attend. I used to take figures to shows with me so I could check for compatibility, but that's pointless now.

  2. Splendid work! The Baueda figures look like a great match alongside the older Museum castings. It's always satisfying to get a classic army back onto the table for DBA 3.

    All the best, Andy

  4. Happy posting - I have the original museum miniatures in a successor dba pack army plus classical Indians and of a style that got me back into the hobby after a long absence and for me a new scale of 15mm. Thanks for sharing

    1. Happy to do so. I, too, have a soft spot for the early Museum figures.
