A victory for squares

One of the great things about playing on squares (or even hexes) is that the base sizes of figures aren't important, as long as they fit in the square. It is also easier to shrink things down to fit on a small area as you don't end up trying to measure increasingly small distances (can you have "Increasingly small"? Should it be "decreasingly small"?).

I had an email from Trevor, who wants to play "It's Getting a Bit Chile" on 2" squares. He also doesn't seem to want to use figures, so he's made company sized counters:

These are the Chileans, complete with Commander counters.

Peruvians, and:

Bolivians. I don't no why they have no commanders, although the absence of Diaz may improve their performance. I really like the look of these counters, with the flags as backgrounds. The Bolivians seem to work the best, with the three bands of colour.

A bit of experimentation with size. They look like they may be on magnetic paper, but I'm not sure.

They do look nice on a bit of terrain. Very clear and functional.

Good to see that lack of figures is no impediment to playing the game!

  1. Good solution for fielding instant armies.

    1. I thought so. It does beg the question as to what the difference is between a board game and a toy soldier game played on squares/hexes.

    2. The difference is clearly aesthetics. Counters on a hex or squared board will never have the appeal, to me anyway, of 3D figures. The picture of counters on a piece of “ traditional” wargames scenery is an interesting twist. I’ve only ever used the idea of substituting figures for card to avoid the tedium of long approach marches and as an aid to “the fog of war” when one side knows “there’s something there” but not what. Flipping over the card cutout reveals what.

    3. I'd like to think there is something else, other than the aesthetics. I, personally, wouldn't game with counters like that. There are board games that would benefit from swapping out counters for the tabletop. SPI's Raid!, for example (which I have done) and the SPI Wellington' Victory series. And "Fighting Sail".
